Automated driving systems can miss roadway dangers

On behalf of Orin Cohen of Orin J. Cohen Law While electronic safety systems introduced into modern cars may give some New York drivers peace of mind, flaws in these systems can also cause risks to drivers and others on the roadway. For example, the technology in these cars may be unable to sense stopped vehicles. If drivers don't keep their own eyes and attention on the roads, they could be steered too easily into a dangerous car accident. In a paper released by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, researchers detailed their tests of five safety systems in cars by Tesla, Mercedes, BMW and...

Brain injuries are some of the worst car crash injuries possible

On behalf of Orin Cohen of Orin J. Cohen Law  Ideally, you would never have to worry about the consequences of a motor vehicle collision. If you are a safe driver, you may think your risk is relatively low. Sadly, a lot of the risk on the roads comes from other drivers and their poor decision-making. No matter how carefully you drive or how safe your vehicle is, all it takes is one person texting or driving while drunk to leave you in a terrible position. There are several different kinds of injuries that people can suffer in crashes, ranging from broken bones to spinal cord injuries....

Newly licensed teen drivers face many risks

On behalf of Orin Cohen of Orin J. Cohen Law Teens are eight times more likely to get in a crash or near-miss collision in their first three months as licensed drivers than in the preceding three months. This is the conclusion of a study conducted by the National Institutes for Health. The NIH has also stated that car crashes are the leading cause of death for those aged 14 to 19, so teens and parents in New York will want to know more about this study. The research involved 90 teen and 131 parent participants from Virginia. Through dashcams and software that recorded data...

August 2 the deadliest day for drivers in the U.S.

On behalf of Orin Cohen of Orin J. Cohen Law Based on crash data spanning the years 2012 to 2016, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety was able to conclude that August 2 is the single deadliest day for drivers in the U.S. A total of 505 people were killed on America's roads during that five-year period. Drivers in New York may have assumed that New Year's Eve or Super Bowl Sunday would be the most dangerous day, so they will want to know the reason for this finding. Researchers at the IIHS state that this random day is the most dangerous for the same...

Three ways for homeowners to improve pool safety

On behalf of Orin Cohen of Orin J. Cohen Law New York residents with a swimming pool know that keeping it secure is a big responsibility. The CDC estimates that there are 7.4 million pools and 5 million hot tubs on residential and public properties in the U.S. It also claims that over 3,500 Americans die in non-boating drowning accidents every year. There are three areas of safety that homeowners will want to concentrate on. The first is the perimeter. Installing a climb-resistant pool fence, at least four feet high and with a self-closing gate, can keep small children away. That includes one's own and the...

Help avoid a crash with safe driving tips

On behalf of Orin Cohen of Orin J. Cohen Law When people in New York get behind the wheel, it is critical that they are aware of the dangers that can befall drivers on the roads. Every year, there are over 32,000 lives taken and 2 million injuries caused by auto accidents across America, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There are a few common issues that cause a large number of these crashes, including distracted driving, drowsy driving and even emotional reactions to events on the highways. Researchers have examined these issues and provided suggestions to drivers for a safer experience...

Far from rest areas, fatigued CMV drivers more liable to crash

On behalf of Orin Cohen of Orin J. Cohen Law Back in November, researchers published a study in Accident Analysis & Prevention, and their conclusions should be of interest to commercial motor vehicle drivers in New York. Fatigued driving is a hazard of the trucking industry, and researchers have found that fatigue-related CMV crashes are more likely in areas far from any truck stops, rest areas or weigh stations with rest havens. Crashes were discovered to be two-and-a-half times more likely in places that are 20 to 40 miles away from rest areas. The prospect of a crash went up seven times in areas more than...

Agency develops new measurement of trucking safety

On behalf of Orin Cohen of Orin J. Cohen Law Truck accidents can be particularly devastating for New York drivers on the road. Due to the size and weight of large semi-trucks, occupants of passenger vehicles are far more likely to be seriously injured or killed in a collision with a tractor-trailer. This means that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, or FMCSA, mandate to identify unsafe trucking companies and improve their records is important for the safety of everyone who takes to the roads. The FMCSA released a report that identified its plans to reform the Compliance, Safety, Accountability program to improve trucking...

Truck crashes pose severe risk to passenger car occupants

On behalf of Orin Cohen of Orin J. Cohen Law Truck accidents can be catastrophic and even deadly for occupants of other vehicles on New York roadways. Because of the weight and mass of tractor-trailers, a collision with a truck can have especially damaging, long-term effects. In addition, the size disparity means that the people in smaller vehicles bear a much greater risk. Statistics collected by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety show that 69 percent of the victims in accidents involving large trucks were in passenger vehicles, while only 16 percent of injured victims were occupants of the trucks. Despite the fact that many...

Larger vehicles provide more crash protection for passengers

On behalf of Orin Cohen of Orin J. Cohen Law Most New York motorists hope they never get into a car accident. Unfortunately, collisions are often inevitable. That's why it's important to have a safe vehicle. According to data from the Highway Loss Data Institute, some cars protect drivers and passengers better than others if that dreaded day ever arrives. According to the laws of physics, larger and heavier vehicles should provide better protection than vehicles that are small and light. HLDI statistics from vehicles manufactured between 2014 and 2016 show that these laws are generally true in real-world conditions. Even though all vehicles are required to...
