Help avoid a crash with safe driving tips

On behalf of Orin Cohen of Orin J. Cohen Law

When people in New York get behind the wheel, it is critical that they are aware of the dangers that can befall drivers on the roads. Every year, there are over 32,000 lives taken and 2 million injuries caused by auto accidents across America, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There are a few common issues that cause a large number of these crashes, including distracted driving, drowsy driving and even emotional reactions to events on the highways.

Researchers have examined these issues and provided suggestions to drivers for a safer experience behind the wheel. Up to a fifth of all fatal car accidents involve someone driving while drowsy, and sleepy drivers can behave similarly to distracted or even drunk people behind the wheel. They are less alert and able to respond in emergency situations. By knowing the signs of drowsy driving, people may be less likely to drive when they are not at their best. Some of these signs include frequent blinking, slower eye movements, slow reaction times and even dozing off.

While people often associate distracted driving with texting or using a cell phone, even relatively innocuous activities like driving with children can be a major – and dangerous – diversion. In many cases, drivers are paying attention to their kids’ needs and questions rather than to the road in front of them. Children may ask for help with snacks or other kinds of entertainment, further diverting parents’ eyes from other vehicles.

While every driver can improve his or her own road readiness and safe practices, another person’s negligent or dangerous behavior can pose a serious threat at any time. A personal injury lawyer can work with an accident victim to seek compensation, including medical bills and lost wages, for the harms he or she has suffered due to a car accident that was caused by another person.
