6 TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE ON YOUR MOTORCYCLE DURING THE SUMMER

Perform a Bike Inspection – Ensure that your motorcycle is in excellent condition. Thoroughly examine the lights, engine, tires, brakes, horn, and mirrors. It’s also advisable to have a mechanic inspect it for any potential issues. Mechanical problems can leave you stranded on the road or lead to accidents. Taking the necessary precautions to identify these issues before embarking on your journey is crucial.

Evaluate Your Gear – Your protective gear acts as a vital barrier between you and severe injuries in case of a collision. Verify that you have all the necessary gear and that it is in optimal condition. Essential safety equipment includes a helmet, boots, jacket, reflective clothing or gear, pants, elbow and knee guards, shin guards, and gloves. While it may be tempting to ride with minimal protection, such as shorts, sneakers, a t-shirt, and no helmet, you’ll deeply regret not wearing proper safety gear if an accident occurs.

Monitor the Weather – Although summer is typically associated with sunny skies and pleasant weather, it’s important to acknowledge that storms can also arise. Therefore, stay vigilant and check the weather forecast before embarking on your ride. Riding in wet conditions or limited visibility is never safe.

Assess Road Conditions – It’s crucial to assess road conditions both before and during your ride. Road conditions are constantly changing, so if you’re aware of any ongoing construction along your planned route, consider taking an alternative path. Similarly, if you notice significant debris like fallen tree branches on your usual route, it would be wise to choose a different route. Whenever possible, opt for roads that are free of hazards and debris.

Ensure Personal Preparedness – Prioritize your own safety by riding responsibly. Refresh your knowledge of best riding practices, particularly if you haven’t ridden your motorcycle in a while. Additionally, never operate your motorcycle if you have consumed alcohol or if you are impaired in any way.

Familiarize Yourself with Applicable Laws – Laws evolve more frequently than many people realize. Therefore, before resuming your motorcycle journeys, take the time to familiarize yourself with the current laws and regulations. For instance, lane splitting is an example of a controversial practice that many motorcyclists are unaware is illegal in Connecticut. Not only is it against the law, but it is also hazardous and can result in accidents and serious injuries.
