Large truck crashes increase in 2016

The number of fatal crashes involving large trucks increased by 3 percent from 2015 to 2016 according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Vehicles, people or objects encroaching into a truck’s lane were contributing factors to 76 percent of those accidents. These accidents were most likely to happen on rural areas of New York and other parts of the country.

Specifically, 61 percent of accidents involving large trucks took place in rural areas while another 15 percent took place on interstate highways in rural locations. One reason why the number of fatal truck accidents increased could be because there were more of these vehicles on the highway. In 2016, there were 11.5 million registered large trucks compared to 11.2 million in 2015. A large truck is defined as one that has a gross weight rating of over 10,000 pounds.

In addition to the fatal accidents, another 104,000 crashes that took place in 2016 caused injuries. This was an increase from 83,000 accidents causing injury in 2015. There were 140,000 injuries resulting from large truck accidents in 2016. Passenger vehicles accounted for 32,702 fatalities and over 3 million injuries in that year.

If a driver, passenger or pedestrian is involved in an accident, it could cause serious injuries. In the event that the crash was caused by another driver, that person might be responsible for compensating accident victims. Drivers could be negligent in causing an accident if they were talking on their phones or impaired at the time of a collision. An attorney may review a case to determine if a victim is entitled to compensation.
