How Data & Analytics Are Helping Insurers With Flood-Damaged Vehicles

Initial estimates of the damage caused by Hurricane Florence are expected to total approximately $20 billion, as residents of the Carolinas and Virginia are faced with cleanup and recovery. The Carolinas experienced historic flood levels, according to Moody’s Analytics. Mark Zandi, chief economist for the firm, said the flooding was more extensive than anticipated because it was such a slow-moving system. The analyst firm also said Florence will end up being one of the ten costliest hurricanes America has ever seen. While homes and businesses face their own cleanup from the flooding, personal transportation causes great headaches as well. Early estimates from...

Brake inspection spree for CMV drivers set for September

On behalf of Orin Cohen of Orin J. Cohen Law From September 16 to 22, commercial motor vehicles across New York and the rest of the U.S. will be subjected to a brake inspection spree. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance conducts this inspection spree, called Brake Safety Week, once a year as a way to ensure that truckers routinely check their brakes and maintain them according to the manufacturer's guidelines. Good brakes mean more efficient braking, which can prevent rear-end collisions and other accidents. In its effort to keep the public safe on the roads, the CVSA will be conducting mostly Level I inspections, which are...

Uneven sidewalks could be risky for bikers, joggers and others

On behalf of Orin Cohen of Orin J. Cohen Law When people think about sidewalk injuries, they probably think about pedestrian accidents with motor vehicles or perhaps a snow-related slip-and-fall incident. However, the potential risks of sidewalks are not limited to only the winter months. The sidewalks themselves can cause injuries and even deaths to unsuspecting people who are just going about their daily lives. Uneven sidewalks can be caused by crumbling cement, encroaching roots, frost heave or ground settling. Property owners and business managers should pay close attention to the condition of their sidewalks and make repairs when necessary. Failing to do so result...

Delayed abdominal pain after a car accident is serious

On behalf of Orin Cohen of Orin J. Cohen Law Many of the injuries that a person might suffer in a car accident do not cause pain immediately. In some instances, these injuries may go undiscovered for some time, until they worsen and become painful. In some cases, this leaves victims with very little time to seek treatment. While not all delayed pain injuries are serious, those that produce pain in a victim's abdomen may indicate something life threatening. If you or someone you love recently experienced a car accident and now feel pain in your abdomen, please seek medical attention as soon as you can. You...

Falling ice during thaws could result in premises liability

On behalf of Orin Cohen of Orin J. Cohen Law The winter in New York brings with it all kinds of serious risks. The potential for motor vehicle crashes increase due to holiday drinking, as well as inclement weather that can leave roads slippery and dangerous. Sidewalks and parking lots can become risky places if ice and snow isn't cleared, resulting in slip-and-fall accidents that injure people. One issue unique to areas with large buildings, including Staten Island and all of New York City, is the danger resulting from falling ice, especially on warmer days. Serious injuries, property damage or even death could result from falling ice...
