The role of new tech in reducing distracted driving

On behalf of Orin Cohen of Orin J. Cohen Law posted in Car Accidents on Monday, June 11, 2018.

Drivers in New York who are wondering what can be done to address distracted driving, especially when it arises from smartphone use, should know about a couple devices. One of them is on the market already and is called Drive ID. Developed by Cellcontrol, a Louisiana-based company, this solar-powered device attaches to the windshield and is able to block all messages and social media updates as well as access to video games.

One of the benefits of Drive ID is that it also automatically detects which phone is the driver’s and which ones are the passengers’. This allows the device to create separate zones and block incoming communications only on the driver’s phone. Drivers and administrators, especially parents, can additionally use the device to get scores on driving performance.

The second device is undergoing two pilot programs and is called Groove. It is produced by Colorado-based company Katasi, and it connects the phone in the car to the cloud, thus informing the phone provider when the user is driving. It prevents the driver from sending messages or posting on social media.

Currently, the problem seems to be a marketing one, but the desire is there. In a National Safety Council survey of 2,400 drivers across America, 55 percent said they would leave such technologies intact in their vehicles. 23 percent said they would deactivate them.

The first thing that victims of car accidents will want to know is whether the individual who caused the accident was distracted or negligent in some other way. This can give them the grounds for a personal injury claim. It would be best to discuss the case with a lawyer, though. An attorney could enlist the help of third-party professionals in bolstering the case with evidence and then proceed to negotiations. A lawyer could also assist with litigation.
