Larger vehicles provide more crash protection for passengers

On behalf of Orin Cohen of Orin J. Cohen Law

Most New York motorists hope they never get into a car accident. Unfortunately, collisions are often inevitable. That’s why it’s important to have a safe vehicle. According to data from the Highway Loss Data Institute, some cars protect drivers and passengers better than others if that dreaded day ever arrives.

According to the laws of physics, larger and heavier vehicles should provide better protection than vehicles that are small and light. HLDI statistics from vehicles manufactured between 2014 and 2016 show that these laws are generally true in real-world conditions. Even though all vehicles are required to meet extensive federal safety standards, smaller cars generally have higher insurance injury claim rates than larger vehicles.

For example, four-door micro cars have the worst injury claim rate among all vehicles, with a score of 215. That score is more than double the industry average score of 100. Meanwhile, minicars have a score of 174, small four-door cars have a score of 146 and midsize sedans have a score of 138. In comparison, large pickup trucks have the best injury claim rate in the industry, with a score of 45. Large SUVs have the second best rate, with a score of 55. The individual vehicle with the worst injury claim rate is the Mitsubishi Lancer, which has a score of 216.

Car accidents often cause catastrophic injuries, including brain injuries, neck ailments and spine problems. In order to recover medical costs and other damages, it may be necessary for victims to file a personal injury claim against the driver who caused the crash. An attorney familiar with personal injury lawsuits could help a victim prepare a claim and file it in court. Legal counsel could also work to negotiate a fair settlement.
